Similar to the United States, which also broke with the WHO after Donald Trump’s election victory, Argentina has left the WHO. The request was submitted in February 2015, when the government cited disagreements in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno announced the news, explaining that “the withdrawal from the WHO also entails a new assertion of sovereignty and a veiled criticism of multilateralism.”
According to the official, the country will continue to promote “international cooperation in health through bilateral agreements and regional forums, fully safeguarding its sovereignty and its decision-making capacity regarding health policies.”
Argentina has strongly criticized the lockdown model promoted by the WHO during the pandemic, calling it a crime against humanity.
