A robot the size of a grain of rice will revolutionize brain surgeries
The startup Rabeauté developed a robot as small as a grain of rice, but that promises to revolutionize brain surgeries thanks to its minimally invasive tool
Complex actions in brain surgeries such as “collecting tissue samples for biopsies, administering medications in specific areas of the brain in certain quantities and even implanting electrodes to treat various types of diseases, such as Parkinson’s, for example” can be performed by a new robot the size of a grain of rice.
The noninvasive tool was developed by the startup Rebeauté based on the experience of one of the team members, whose mother was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor.
This was the trigger for starting to work on the design of “robots for extreme environmental work” until “creating this prototype of a mini robot surgeon.”
Of course, the researchers were also looking for an alternative that would allow them to reach remote areas of the brain that were previously unreachable in a less invasive way.
The rice-sized robot passed two very important test phases with animal and human cadavers. “Its next big test is scheduled for 2026, the date on which it could carry out its first test on living human beings, provided it receives approval from the US FDA.”
