Electrical consumption of Bitcoin mining in the US is very high

US legislators conducted an investigation that determined that the electricity consumption of Bitcoin mining is very high

An investigation carried out by US legislators, led by Congressman Jared Hauffman, determined that the electricity consumption of companies dedicated to Bitcoin mining is quite high, similar to the consumption of all houses in Houston, Texas.

The study was based on requesting information on the location, operations, energy consumption and emission of polluting gases from the most important mining companies in the United States: Riot, Marathon, Bit Deer, Bit Digital, Stonghold, Greenidge and Bitfury.

The result confirmed that the electrical consumption of these companies is equivalent to 1,045.3 MW; which, according to the legislators, is what is consumed by the residential electric park of the city of Houston, one of the most important in the state of Texas.

The congressmen sent the results obtained to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy (DOE) of the United States and demanded that they take the pertinent measures to the situation and expect to obtain a response by August 15. At that time, the congressmen hope that the EPA and the DOE deepen the investigation of the electrical consumption and the carbon emissions of these companies.

Bitcoin mining is cleaner every day

The investigation also produced a figure that worries politicians and is related to the environmental footprint of Bitcoin mining operations. According to the study, the carbon emission of the companies Stronghold, Greenidge and Bit Digital is similar to 360 thousand cars running.

For its part, the Riot company explained that 51MW of its electricity consumption comes only from renewable energies such as hydroelectricity, but its factory in “Whinstone uses the energy of the local company, which generates it through coal and natural gas”.

Despite the figures produced by the investigation of Bitcoin mining in the global sphere and in the United States in particular, plans are being developed to make this activity cleaner every day, it is how the “Aspen Creek Digital and Blockstream projects are working on founding new farms powered by solar energy.”
