The CIA expressed great interest in cryptocurrencies
The director of the CIA indicated that the institution has a lot of interest in cryptocurrencies and has several projects focused on digital currencies underway
William Burns, Director of the United States Central Intelligence Agency(CIA), stated that the institution is deeply interested in cryptocurrencies, stating that the intelligence agency has “a number of different projects focused on cryptocurrency” on the go.
The intervention was made by Burns in the framework of a talk at the CEO Summit of the Wall Street Journal, where one of the attendees questioned him about the opinion of cryptocurrencies and their relationship with ransomware.
Burns assured that he inherited the subject because his predecessor had already started the work related to cryptocurrencies and had “a number of different projects underway focusing on cryptocurrency and trying to see the consequences of the second and third order as well and help our colleagues in other parts of the world.”
Cryptocurrencies are at the center of the ransomware epidemic right now, and US officials are trying to control and end them. As you will remember, ransomware has attacked different public and private organizations. In May of this year in the United States, they attacked a gas pipeline company that generated panic purchases and gas shortages in several states of that country.
