Germany prepares first drone regiment

The German Armed Forces plan to have their first drone regiment ready by 2027, as a step in adapting to modern warfare with the use of advanced technology, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said last week

Germany has taken steps in the area of defense, with a focus on the use of new technologies. In this regard, last week Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated that they expect to have the first drone regiment ready by 2027.

Drawing on lessons learned from the conflict in Ukraine, the German government, through its Armed Forces, seeks to stay ahead with new devices for use in warfare.

Pistorius visited a military training area in Bergen, Lower Saxony, and reiterated that the decision to create this drone regiment was made “based on the lessons learned from the conflict in Ukraine.”

The minister noted that the regiment “will deploy unmanned aerial and ground systems with operational ranges of up to 500 kilometers and will include an electronic warfare company.” He specified that the specialized unit will begin with around “300 soldiers before expanding to an estimated strength of 600.”
