OpenAI, the American artificial intelligence company, is reportedly working on a smartphone dedicated exclusively to this technology, in collaboration with MediaTek and Qualcomm. Design and manufacturing would be handled by Luxshare Precision Industry.
According to data leaked by supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, OpenAI is focusing its research on the mass production of a smartphone by 2028.
This ambitious plan aims to leverage so-called AI agents to “transform the user experience of the device. Instead of primarily interacting with standalone applications, the user could delegate tasks to artificial intelligence systems capable of understanding context and executing actions more directly.”
This would result in a more seamless and contextual interface, “where AI would act as an intermediary between the user and the phone’s various functions.”
According to Kuo, the smartphone represents an ideal platform for running AI systems that can make decisions based on real-time information, which the system can obtain from the user’s own data, such as their habits, location, and communications.
“For OpenAI, controlling both the hardware and the operating system could be key to delivering a fully integrated AI agent experience.” If the company’s plans come to fruition, it would enter the smartphone market to compete alongside Apple, Samsung, Motorola, Xiaomi, and Huawei, among others.
