The United States was overtaken as Germany’s top trading partner by China, which surpassed the American country in the first eight months of 2025.
This change in trade dynamics, according to data from the German statistics office, is mainly due to the crisis generated by the increase in tariffs that hampered German exports to the United States.
“German imports and exports with China totaled 163.4 billion euros (190.7 billion dollars) from January to August, while trade with the US amounted to 162.8 billion euros,” according to Reuters calculations.
Regarding the tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump, “they have put downward pressure on German exports to the United States, which fell 7.4 % in the first eight months of the year compared to 2014, to €99.6 billion. In August, exports to the United States fell 23.5 % year-on-year, showing that the trend is accelerating.”
