Bancamiga and MFM Foundation Launch Program to encourage reading and creativity

The innovative initiative will be carried out in three schools in Caracas. Under the guidance of a teaching artist, the workshops will encourage children to develop their creative abilities and create a small publication

Bancamiga and the MFM Foundation for Reading announced the launch of their innovative program “The Image and the Word,” an initiative designed to stimulate creativity, encourage reading and writing skills, and foster a deep love of books in elementary school students.

“In the framework of International Book Day, we are pleased to announce the launch of this pioneering program involving 5th-grade students, who will participate in a series of three workshops. The main objective is to foster an enriching exchange of knowledge through reading and the exploration of visual and literary narratives,” explained Mariana Flores Melo, President of the MFM Reading Foundation.

Bancamiga’s Social Responsibility Department will bring its initiative to three schools in Caracas: Colegio Fe y Alegría Prisco Villasmil in Antímano; Colegio La Santísima Trinidad in Los Magallanes de Catia; and Colegio Fe y Alegría Enrique De Ossó in San Martín. The program will subsequently be expanded to other schools in the capital and other regions of the country, Flores Melo announced.

Under the coordination of Lorena González, professor, writer, and curator of contemporary art, each workshop will feature a teaching artist, supported by a production team, who will guide the young people in the development of their creative faculties, inviting them to explore their own artistic possibilities.

The workshops, structured in five sessions each, will offer a space for teachers and students to interact, discovering the narrative possibilities inherent in images, as well as the visual possibilities present in literature.

Book publication and exhibition process

A central objective of “The Image and the Word” is the creation of a small publication, resulting from the workshop work, which will be edited and produced with the guidance of the expert teachers. This publication seeks to strengthen the participants’ connection with the book as an object and source of inspiration.

During each workshop, students will immerse themselves in the production of various book formats, including fanzines, Artist Books, Object Books, and Video Books. The short stories that will serve as the basis for creative exploration will be selected by each workshop facilitator in consultation with the participants, using the valuable catalog of the MFM Reading Foundation as a resource.

The culmination of this enriching program will be celebrated with the presentation of the books produced in the workshops and the reading of the texts created by the young participants.

Bancamiga Banco Universal and the MFM Reading Foundation are allied institutions in their mutual interest in promoting access to books and knowledge, benefiting communities throughout Venezuela, as well as the bank’s employees.
