Xbox requires age verification to accounts in the UK
Microsoft has launched the age verification measure for Xbox in the UK as a protective measure for younger gamers
The United Kingdom must comply with the age verification request for Xbox, Microsoft recently announced. The measure seeks to protect gamers, particularly younger ones.
The announcement has put countries such as Spain, Mexico, and Colombia on alert, considering that the measure could affect local gamers.
As the technology company stated, “the verification affects accounts declared as 18 years of age or older and will be required to continue using social features such as voice chat, messages, or game invites without limitations.” For its part, Xbox confirmed in an official statement that the decision has no impact on “games, history, or previous purchases, but those who do not verify their age will see their social use restricted to friends only starting in 2026.”
In the document, Xbox clarifies that the measure “seeks to comply with the UK Online Safety Act, a law that requires mechanisms to protect minors on digital platforms. Verification will be mandatory starting in early 2026, although users can already complete it voluntarily now to avoid future restrictions.”
Among the options for completing age verification, the platform offers several secure options: through an official ID, a bank card, a mobile operator card, or facial recognition. They assure us that this process is encrypted, and the information is not stored or used for other purposes.
Regarding security, Microsoft maintains its recommendation that parents create child or youth accounts from the beginning, given that they “do not require additional verification and can be easily managed from the Xbox Family Settings app.”
