WHO evaluates its international health response to the crisis

The member countries hope to pass consensus resolution and initiate independent evaluation

The 194 member countries of the World Health Organization (WHO) held this Monday the first virtual general assembly in history, hoping to adopt the proposal by the European Union (EU) for consensus on a proposed resolution calling for it to be initiated “as soon as possible … an impartial, independent and comprehensive evaluation process” in order to respond to the global crisis.

In the opening speech, leaders from countries such as China, France and Germany have called for international cooperation and solidarity to tackle the virus.

The 73rd World Assembly has put on the table a systematic review of the global response to covid-19, which has infected 4.7 million people and killed 315,000 worldwide to this proposal suggested by the Union European countries such as the United Kingdom, Russia, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, among others, have joined.

The text proposed by the EU was put on the table at the meeting, and although it does not mention China or Wuhan, the WHO is requested to work “to identify the zoonotic origin of the virus and determine the route by which it entered the human population, including the possible role of intermediate hosts, (…) in particular through collaborative and scientific missions in the field.”

However, Chinese President Xi Jinping has said he would support this “comprehensive assessment of the global response to the epidemic” after “the pandemic is under control, to summarize experiences and remedy deficiencies.”
