WeChat will remove accounts of crypto traders
The popular social network WeChat will remove the accounts of Chinese users who trade with cryptoactives
WeChat is not only a social network, it is also a messaging service, very similar to Whatsapp or Telegram and a digital payment platform. It is operated by technology giant Tencent. The latest update to its privacy policy indicates that the accounts of people who have made transactions with crypto coins will be deleted.
This update of the payment service protocol was made on April 30, indicating that merchants who use its service should not “directly or indirectly” participate in “any initial activity of offering coins or operate with digital currency trading.
The new policy will be effective on May 31, and by that time WeChat will cancel payment services for non-compliant merchants. However, activities related to cryptoactives were not categorized as “illegal transactions”.
It is worth remembering that last year the firm carried out a campaign to block official accounts linked in any way to crypto currencies. Even those who shared information about purchases of mining equipment or market analysis were censored.
At the time Bitmain, the world’s largest mining company, was one of the victims of the measure. The CEO of the company defended WeChat on that occasion, saying that “it’s probably not his own decision.”
