Washington State sued Facebook and Google

The purpose of the accusation is to punish the companies for "not revealing the propaganda expense in the state elections since 2013"

On Monday, June 4, the state of Washington reported that it filed a lawsuit against Facebook Inc and Google of Alphabet Inc for “allegedly violating the state’s campaign finance law by failing to maintain information about who buys advertising campaign ads.”

Bob Ferguson, the state’s attorney general, published copies of the lawsuits on his website and said he seeks sanctions against the companies and a court order for not revealing the spending on propaganda in state elections since 2013.

Unlike most US jurisdictions, both the state of Washington and the city of Seattle have laws dating back to the 1970s that require companies that sell advertising, such as radio stations, to reveal who buys propaganda. Other states have placed the responsibility to inform on buyers.

Facebook said it expects to resolve the lawsuit soon, because it recently created tools for people to see who is buying political propaganda on their social network. Although no Google representative has commented on the matter, the company has promised to create an online archive of the advertising and publicity that is published in its service.
