Volkswagen to indemnify diesel vehicles owners
The manufacturer announced that it reached an agreement after the manipulation scandal of these engines
The German automaker Volkswagen announced that it has reached a settlement in the diesel engine manipulation scandal for which it will pay some 200,000 affected diesel car owners in Germany a compensation of $ 670 million.
The sum is made up of individual amounts between $ 1,300 and $ 6,300, to be paid starting May 5. In some 21,000 cases, the final exam is still pending. In addition, the deadline for new registrations and the completion of the missing documents was extended until April 30.
Earlier this year, the automotive group agreed in principle with the Federal Association of Consumer Advisory Centers.
The agreement provides for consumers affected by diesel fraud to receive compensation for the loss of value of their vehicles. The compromise, however, only applies to diesel drivers who have joined the class action lawsuit.
“The high number of agreements reached today demonstrates that the settlement offer was perceived as fair by our customers and that the path to an individual solution worked well”, said Hiltrud Werner, Volkswagen’s board member.
The German automaker admitted in September 2015 that it had manipulated more than 11 million diesel cars worldwide by placing a fraudulent device that disguised actual gas emissions.
