USA and Mexico sign preliminary free trade agreement

It is a bilateral agreement between the two nations on which the rest of the world is focused given the tensions in their relations

The United States and Mexico signed a preliminary free trade agreement that replaces the North Atlantic Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which entered into force in 1994 between Mexico, Canada and the US. The announcement was made this Monday, August 27th, explaining that this time Canada will not be part of the agreement.

Donald Trump and the still president of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto, met in the Oval Office of the White House for the signing of this agreement that the former considers “very good” for foreign trade.

The “Trade Agreement between the United States and Mexico” is the new name of the negotiation instrument between the two countries. Peña Nieto has indicated his interest to incorporate Canada.

In this regard, Trump said he will soon contact the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeu, adding that the country has only two options: “negotiate a new trade agreement or deal with tariffs on their cars.”

One aspect to be taken into account in this agreement is that the signing of the Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister, Chrystia Freeland, is required for its renewal.
