US military dogs will wear Augmented Reality glasses

The intention is that the dogs' human companions can give commands effectively at a safe distance

Dogs are crucial in complex missions, such as searching for explosives or in rescue operations, but in some situations the military has difficulty giving the necessary orders without putting themselves at risk.

For this reason, the Office of Military Research has started a project that uses Command Sight technology to equip military dogs with augmented reality glasses, as reported in a statement. The purpose is that their human companions can effectively command them at a safe distance.

With these glasses, a dog handler can give directional commands while keeping a distance. It is an accessory designed specifically for dogs, so that it fits well on the head, and displays a visual indicator with which the dog is directed to a certain place.

In this case, it is not a technology with which the dog can interact, but which facilitate communication between the handler and the animal. Typically, this communication is done through gestures or laser pointers, and requires the person to be close.
