UPS is considering the use of blockchain for shipments

The logistics company asked the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) the authorization to adopt this technology

The giant of the shipments of more than 100 years of trajectory, United Parcel Service (UPS), assured to be considering the possibility of implementing the blockchain technology within its service of packages.

The company explained that the use of this system could expedite the shipment of packages within a global supply company.

As indicated by a document issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), UPS would have applied for the patent for the use of distributed blockchain and ledger technologies (DLT). In recent months, shipping companies have focused on finding ways to improve efficiency and minimize delivery times.

“Here there may be situations in which it is advantageous for several logistics service providers to transport the shipping unit along different segments / phases from their origin to their destination. However, it may be difficult to coordinate the transport of the shipping unit through the various transport networks of the logistics service provider, and if there are special handling requirements to transport the shipping unit, it can be difficult to ensure that special handling requirements are carried out by each of the various logistics service providers that can help transport the shipping unit, said the authors of the petition.

The system could be developed in order to accommodate interconnected DLT networks that use smart contracts to pay several parties within the supply chain, since they fulfill their obligations within a particular segment of the shipment.
