Universal USB type C charger will be mandatory in Spain from 2025

From December 28, 2024, Spain will adopt the resolution on the use of the universal USB type C cable, which will make it mandatory from 2025

In 2025, the universal USB type C charger will be mandatory from 2025 in Spain. The adoption of the measure will be effective on December 28 of this year.

Reducing electronic waste and simplifying the life of the consumer are two of the pillars of this decision regarding the use of the same, single, USB type C charger for different personal digital devices.

The Council of Ministers approved this resolution in April and “modified the regulation on the marketing of radio equipment by requiring everyone to use a USB type C charger, a measure that affects all chargers for mobile phones, tablets, cameras, headphones or speakers.”

In addition to contributing to the reduction of electronic waste and allowing users not to have to invest money in different chargers for each device, the EU seeks to encourage innovation: “By establishing a common standard, manufacturers are expected to focus on improving other aspects of their products, such as energy efficiency and charging speed.”

Will there be consequences? Obviously, the change will have an impact on the market, although analysts believe that it will be positive, as it will reduce costs for users, as well as providing them with convenience. On the other hand, they will not have to deal with chargers that no longer work or lose compatibility and that remain in the drawer without any use.

Regarding manufacturers, they will have to adapt to the measure within a reasonable time, which could generate some additional costs. However, it will be the ideal excuse to “innovate in other aspects of their devices and stand out in the market, since as far as the charger is concerned, everyone will have to use the same one, so it will no longer be a differentiating aspect.”
