The High Commissioner for Human Rights of the United Nations, Volker Türk, expressed this Tuesday his concern about the increase in tension in Venezuela after the presidential elections that took place in the country on Sunday, July 28.

In a statement from the organization, Türk indicated: “Demonstrations have occurred in at least 17 of Venezuela’s 24 states, including the capital, and hundreds of people have been detained, including children.”

He also referred to the protesters on Monday, July 29, who were injured by what he considers the excessive use of force by the forces of public order but also by armed individuals affiliated with the ruling party known as “collectives.”

He described the situation in the country as a “critical situation” and “urged the authorities to respect the right of all Venezuelans to peacefully assemble and protest and express their opinions freely and without fear.”
