UN commits to sustainable development in Latin America
Latin American governments are urged to make fiscal efforts in order to establish more resources to invest in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The meeting of the organization focuses on Latin America’s compliance with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which were agreed in 2015 by 193 world leaders to reduce poverty and inequality by 2030.
The 17 objectives set by the United Nations (UN) are aimed at strengthening education, health, culture, gender equity and environmental protection.
The experts affirm that it is urgent that the countries of the region mobilize more internal resources, advance in progressive fiscal policies and offer incentives for the private sector to invest in social objectives.
In the last 15 years, Latin America has experienced the highest welfare quotas in its history thanks to economic development and subsidies. However, according to the UN, one out of every three Latin Americans is at risk of falling back into poverty due to the economic recession, after 15 years of prosperity.
Although there are no guarantees that these SDGs will be established in all countries, the UN hopes that the development of smarter and more cooperative policies can be achieved.
It is expected to include indigenous peoples, afro-descendants, peasants, youth, women and sexual minorities in the labor market and education so that they can achieve progress under equal conditions.
