UK GDP stagnated at the end of 2019

The NSO determined that the economy was affected during the months of October, November and December with different falls and rebounds

The National Statistics Office (ONS in Spanish) reported that the UK Gross Domestic Product stagnated during the fourth quarter of 2019.

After having registered an expansion of 0.5% during the third period, the economy of England was possibly affected by the final phase that Brexit experienced prior to the agreement during those months.

“There was no growth in the last quarter of 2019, since the increases in the services and construction sectors were offset by another poor performance of manufacturing, particularly in the motor industry”, said Rob Kent-Smith, head of the area of GDP in the British statistical office.

Between October and December, services representing around 80% of the British economy showed an expansion of 0.1% and construction of 0.5%, while production fell by 0.8%, including a contraction of 1.1% of manufactures, and a decline of two tenths in agriculture.

The monthly evolution of the GDP of the United Kingdom in the last quarter of 2019 reflects a 0.2% growth in October, followed by a 0.3% drop in November and a 0.3% rebound in December, after general elections.
