UK Finance Minister bets on extending Brexit negotiations

The leader of the United Kingdom, Theresa May, asked the European Union to extend the deadline for discussing terms until June 30 of this year

Phillip Hammond, the British Finance Minister, said he was confident about a positive European Union position to extend the Brexit negotiations.

“Most of the colleagues I’m talking to accept that we would need more time to complete this process, so I’m optimistic about Wednesday’s Council”, Hammond said.

The minister wants the brexit process to be completed as soon as possible in an orderly manner. This led to Theresa May requesting a new extension of negotiations until June 30.

Hammond also hopes to find “a form of agreement” with the Labor Party in the talks the government initiated with the opposition last week in order to find common ground to unlock the exit process.

“Our focus in the talks with the Labor Party is that we do not have red lines. We will go in these conversations with an open mind and we will discuss everything in a constructive way,” the minister said.
