UK bans use of 5G technology

The British government issued an order to telephone operators to remove any equipment from Huawei that manages these networks

The UK Government has ordered telecommunications operators to completely withdraw any Huawei equipment on their 5G networks before the end of 2027 due to the impact of the latest sanctions imposed by the United States (US) on the Chinese technology manufacturer.

This has been decided by the United Kingdom’s National Security Council (NSC), following the recommendation issued by the country’s National Cybersecurity Center (NCSC), which will also prohibit the purchase of any new Huawei 5G equipment after December 31, 2020.

In a statement, the United Kingdom Government explains that with this decision it responds to the new sanctions imposed in May by the United States on Huawei, which limited the company’s ability to use American technology and software in the manufacture and design of its semiconductors abroad.

The NCSC technical experts reviewed the consequences of these sanctions and concluded that the company will have to carry out a “major reconfiguration” of its supply chain, given that it will no longer have access to the technology it is currently based on, and there are no alternatives in which the Government has sufficient confidence.

In this sense, experts consider that the new restrictions “make it impossible to continue guaranteeing the security of Huawei equipment in the future” and, consequently, the Government agreed that operators stop buying equipment from this company affected by the sanctions.

“The decision takes into account our specific national circumstances and how the risks of these sanctions are manifested in the United Kingdom”, stressed the British management, adding that the current restrictions on Huawei in sensitive and critical parts of the network remain in force.
