Trump and Leyen will seek solutions to bilateral disputes

They recognize that a trade war would not benefit either of them, and that it would create a disastrous scenario

The president of the United States, Donald Trump, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, have pledged to continue deepening their bilateral relations in order to avoid a trade war between them. This commitment was acquired last Tuesday on the occasion of the annual session of the World Economic Forum that takes place in the town of the Swiss Alps in Davos.

For its part, the European delegation considers the meeting as an achievement and considers the fact that it culminates with a commitment to follow up on the talks a signal for technicians to continue working to reach an “quick” agreement.

It is important to mention that the commitment acquired by both powers involves many common interests. One of the disputes in which the greatest progress has been registered in recent days is the European plan to impose a tax on the US technology grades of the digital sector, known as the GAFA rate (acronym for Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon).

In this regard, the EU is guided by the principle that whoever does business in a given market and benefits from its infrastructure, its social, educational, protection system, must contribute to it, even if it does not have a physical presence on it.

In addition, France, one of the EU member countries, supports the European plan and announced that it will wait for the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) to study a multilateral solution.
