Tesla to install a battery farm in Australia

The region takes a decisive step away from coal power and adopting new technologies that will unlock more renewable energy than ever

The French company Neoen SA will partner with Tesla Inc. to install the world’s largest lithium-ion battery farm in Australia, after reaching a grid connection agreement with the electricity market operator.

If built as promised, the farm will have a capacity of 300 megawatts and a storage breadth of 450 megawatt hours, making it more than twice the size of the farm in Hornsdale, South Australia, which was the largest of the world when it began operations in 2017.

The installation of the new system in Australia’s second most populous state will help modernize and stabilize the local grid that aims for 50 % of its energy to come from renewable sources by 2030, Neoen said in a press release. The Paris-based company is on a mission to get the battery operational by the end of 2021.

Like the Hornsdale facility, the Geelong battery facility will be built with Tesla equipment. It is expected to store enough energy to run around 500,000 homes for half an hour.

“By securing one of the largest battery farms in the world, Victoria is taking a decisive step away from coal power and embracing new technologies that will unlock more renewable energy than ever before,” said Victoria’s Minister for Energy and Climate Change, Lily D’Ambrosio.
