Telefónica and Facebook create “Internet for All Peru”

Open access telecommunications infrastructure operator seeks to reduce the digital gap in Latin America

Telefónica, Facebook, IDB Invest and the Development Bank of Latin America developed the Internet for All (IpT) Peru. According to an official statement, the purpose is to bring mobile broadband to remote populations where telecommunications are economically impossible.

According to sources related to the project, about 20% of the population of the region – equivalent to 100 million people – do not have access to mobile Internet and obviously are limited benefits offered by the digital economy.

In view of the situation, the Internet for All hopes to minimize this digital gap and connect Peru’s rural communities, allowing any operator to use its 3G and 4G infrastructure to market quality communications services in these localities.

“IpT” (in Spanish) can achieve economic sustainability through signed agreements with local communities and the use of open technologies that will reduce deployment costs. The success of the initiative will also lay the foundation for replicating the business model in other countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.
