Switzerland proceeds to return embezzled funds to Conmebol

The Attorney General's Office announced the return of more than 40 million dollars to the governing body of South American soccer

Switzerland returned more than $ 40 million of embezzled funds to the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol), the governing body of soccer in South America, according to the highest Swiss tax authority on Wednesday.

The Swiss Attorney General’s Office had been seizing money from Swiss bank accounts since last December.

The money is linked to investigations against the late Nicolás Leoz, who worked as the president of Conmebol for many years, as well as Eduardo Deluca, a former secretary general of the organization, the office said.

Deluca has been convicted in Switzerland for aiding in the aforementioned embezzlement, while the case against Leoz was dropped after his death in August 2019.
