Swiss Parliament may apply regulations for cryptocurrencies

The Federal Assembly of the nation will grant functions to the Council to promote new legal provisions for digital assets

The Federal Assembly of Switzerland approved a project this week which consists of instructing the Federal Council to adapt the existing legal provisions for the creation of a new legal framework that contemplates the regulation of cryptocurrencies.

This authorization will allow the council to make a series of proposals on digital assets for the spring season this year.

The motion, proposed by Giovanni Merlini, was approved with 83 votes in favor, 10 abstentions of about 99 participants.

This proposal will intend to instruct the agency in the application of the instruments used by the judicial and administrative authorities of Switzerland in the regulation of cryptocurrencies.

There is a need “to close the gaps in the protection against abuse,” says Merlini, pointing out that what needs to be taken care of is the anonymity of transactions in the world of cryptocurrencies.
