Sony seems to have decided the future of the physical format of its video games with the decision to suspend its manufacturing from 2028.
The video game industry has changed rapidly thanks to technological advances. Digital platforms are the new scenario for gamers; However, games on optical discs, such as CDs, DVDs and Blue-ray, could have a lifespan of about 100 years thanks to current storage methods.
In any case, Sony’s decision is confirmed: starting in 2028 it will stop manufacturing physical video games. This will affect the PlayStation player segment, so they will have to turn to their “current collections and the second-hand market to enjoy classic and modern titles.”
In this sense, although specialists remember that nothing lasts forever, discs stored in optimal ventilation conditions, without humidity or direct exposure to light, can have a useful life of between 30 and 100 years. Good news for lovers of physical video games.
