Smart cities are a must for Latin America

Latin American cities need to become smart to combat serious problems such as security, mobility and energy management

At present, smart cities are a priority. Latin America is one of the regions that faces this challenge. This was stated by Cisco at Cisco Live, the annual conference held by the telecommunications giant in Cancun, Mexico.

For Jordi Botifoll, President of Cisco Latin America, the region brings together a number of conditions that forces it to place the concept of smart cities on the front line of its digitization projects, especially for the economic opportunity it would represent for cities.

The head of Cisco in the region said that traffic management is very complicated, but having a global vision is much easier, since the IoT platforms use sensor data to assess where the flows go and thus take actions in the moment.

Latin American cities are very insecure. Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Bogota and Caracas are some examples. The concept of public and safety is essential and necessary, so a city full of sensors or cameras would solve it.

According to Botifoll, investments of this type are important because, especially in Latin America, businesses look to be far from danger. The executive highlighted the work of Cisco and its business allies, in which the firm currently has 50 alliances with different metropolises ranging from Rio de Janeiro to Buenos Aires or Mexico City.

The technology event presented in Cancun the main advances in Smart Cities and other areas in the so-called World Of Solutions, a space of 5,000 square meters with demonstrations in real time solutions.
