Singapore launches OpenCerts to issue graduate certificates in blockchain

Students from 18 educational institutions in Singapore will receive digital certificates based on blockchain

The OpenCerts project is developed by the government of Singapore with the collaboration of the Ministry of Education (MOE), the Government Technology Agency, the national education movement Skills Future Singapore (SSG) and the Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) higher education institution.

It is expected that the OpenCerts platform driven by the ethereum blockchain will provide a reliable way to issue and verify certificates, increase data security, the efficiency of the issuance and validation processes. Also, to reduce the costs associated with paper certificates.

The institution decided to use blockchain technology in the issuance and verification of certificates due to a difficulty with productivity.

It is worth emphasizing that the adoption of the platform represents the elimination of two important requirements: the need for a leveraged document and the requirement for verification.

OpenCerts was first tested in 2018 by GovTech and NP, with the first batch of digital certificates issued to NP graduates. The institution issues around 10.000 physical copies of certificates every year, all printed and stamped.
