Sierra Leone will have a new identification system

The United Nations agreed to provide a personal information tool developed with blockchain technology

The United Nations decided to agree with Sierra Leone and a technology company to develop an identification system based on the blockchain.

Those responsible for this project will be the U.N Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), the U.N Development Program (UNDP), two non-profit organizations, along with the president of Sierra Leone, Julius Maada Bio, who intend to “modernize the nation”.

Sierra Leone was chosen because they only have a credit service that serves more than two thousand people, which represents less than 11% of the total population. In this sense, 80% of the nation would not be banked.

“By implementing this, Sierra Leone will build one of the most advanced and secure credit platforms in the world. This can serve as a model for developing nations, and even for developed ones. In the future, we have the potential to radically change the landscape of financial inclusion,” said UNCDF Executive Vice President Xavier Michon.

The intention of the authorities is to provide personal information tools to citizens, as well as providing them with a digital wallet.
