Samsung began producing the first LPDDR5 RAM chip with 12 GB capacity which will be compatible with high-end smartphones and which will maximize the potential of 5G connectivity and Artificial Intelligence functions.
The Samsung technology company announced the manufacture of this new chip five months after having started the mass production of the 12 GB LPDDR4X. According to the company, they plan to start mass producing 12 GB LPDDR5 packs later this month. Each lot will come equipped with eight chips with a capacity of 12 GB each.
This product tries to respond to the high demand for greater performance and space in mobile phone devices from the manufacturers of smartphones, as explained by the company.
The benefits of this new chip are summarized in that it offers a high efficiency of speed and power. It allows the latest generation phones a total compatibility with 5G and Artificial Intelligence functions, such as ultra HD recording and automatic learning, plus a longer battery life of the mobile.
The chip uses 13 percent less energy than the previous chip, since it has a low power feature that allows the devices to continue operating at a speed that is considerably faster.
The chip’s bit rate is 5,500 megabytes per second (Mb/s), 1.3 times faster than the memory of the previous Samsung chip, the LPDDR4X, which had a rate of 4,266 Mb/s. In addition, LPDDR5 GB with the maximum capacity of 12 GB has enough power to transfer 44GB of data, which is equivalent to twelve movies in full HD of 3.7 GB in a single second.
Samsung has also reported that depending on the demand of global customers, they could move the production of the 12 GB LPDDR5 chip to the Pyeongtaek campus (South Korea) for greater flexibility. They also aim to develop a 16 GB LPDDR5 chip next year.
