Samsung starts mass production of 16GB EUV RAM

The South Korean firm's bet is aimed at offering faster mobile devices through new memory chips

South Korean company Samsung has started production of 16GB LPDDR5 RAM with extreme ultraviolet (EUV) technology, which it has claimed are roughly 16 percent faster than previous 12GB LPDDR5 memory chips.

Samsung has highlighted that the 16GB LPDDR5 memory chips are 30 percent thinner than their predecessor, thanks to the 10-nanometer process, allowing 5G multi-camera smartphones, as well as folding smartphones, to include more features in a slim design.

Also, the company has indicated that the 16GB memories are 16 percent faster on the 12GB model, so it can transfer about ten 5GB Full HD movies or 51.2GB of data in one second.

This RAM model “raises the industry to a new threshold, overcoming a major development hurdle in scaling DRAM in advanced nodes,” Jung Bae Lee, Executive Vice President of DRAM Product and Technology at Samsung, said in a statement.

Samsung has also indicated that it “plans to further strengthen its presence in the flagship mobile device market throughout 2021” and that it will expand the use of its LPDDR5 offerings “in automotive applications“.
