Samsung and Xilinx create a smart SSD with 4TB capacity

The storage unit can hold 12TB of data and has an internal processor that handles most of the tasks

The South Korean company Samsung has presented in collaboration with Xilinx a smart solid-state storage unit that has 4TB of capacity that can store up to 12TB of data.

The new storage unit, called SmartSSD CSD (Computational Storage Drive), has an internal processor that handles most of the data processing tasks, but transfers the data processing capacity to the SSD.

It is also capable of transparently compressing data to increase the storage capacity of the SSD, according to Forbes.

SmartSSD CSD is sized for a 2.5-inch SSD and offers 4TB of physical storage capacity, although it can store up to 12TB of data when combined with accelerated transparent compression.

The new SmartSSD CSD storage units are now available for pre-order and will begin shipping from January through Xilinx and its authorized resellers.
