Russian church must pay for cryptocurrency mining

The government determined that Grace Evangelical Church must pay a high sum for cryptocurrency mining in its facilities

The Russian authorities have followed the evangelical church Grace for suspicions of mining cryptocurrencies. Regulatory officials followed the recent electricity bills of the religious organization due to the considerable increase in the amounts.

Grace church spokesmen have denied they are using electric power for the cryptoming activity. However, according to the electricity supplier Irkutskenegro, during the year 2017 the consumption of the organization increased considerably.

On the other hand, control officers of this company found a computer room on the second floor of the church. In this regard they have indicated that the high energy consumption in the place represents a risk for neighboring areas.

One aspect that drives people to engage in cryptocurrency mining is the low cost of electricity. Many people do it in their own residence.

However, current legislation in Russia states that those who engage in cryptocurrency exploitation must pay higher electricity rates. Although the church, located in Irkutsk, has denied any involvement in the case, the Arbitration Court of the locality ruled in favor of the electricity company and the church must pay a reimbursement of 1.1 million rubles; that is, more than $ 16,000 USD.
