Piñatex is an ecological textile material alternative to leather

The filament of the pineapple leaf used to make garments was conceived by the Spanish designer Carmen Hijosa, director of the company Ananas Anam

The Spanish designer Carmen Hijosa worked in the leather industry and was concerned about the high costs of production and manufacturing, as well as the impact on the environment. A few years ago the now director of the company Ananas Anam undertook an alternative project called Piñatex.

It is a filament obtained from the leaf of the pineapple which processing uses low impact systems in the environment. The company of Hijosa, based in London, employs groups of farmers in various countries, particularly in the Philippines, which is the third producer of pineapple in the world.

The production of pineapple is in second place in the world, below the mango, with an approximate of 25 tons. To obtain one square meter of the textile, about 500 sheets of pineapple are required.

According to Hijosa, the textile product has characteristics very appreciated in the world of clothing and fashion: as softness, flexibility and durability. It is currently used to make footwear (tennis, boots, sandals), handbags, accessories, clothing (jackets, dresses, skirts), upholstery fabrics for home and vehicles, among others.

The base of Piñatex, as indicated before, is the pineapple leaf. Therefore, it is a sustainable, ecological and ethical product, according to the words of Carmen Hijosa. In homes it is considered a waste, but in Ananas Anam, founded in 2013, it is the raw material for beautiful confections.

An emblematic phrase of the innovative Spanish designer is: “Design is not only about the product, but about the responsibility“. Its commitment to the environment has made it difficult, such as the economic losses suffered in 2017 due to high production costs.

Despite the ups and downs, the company continues to establish strategic alliances with giants such as Puma and Hugo Boss thanks to the high awareness that exists regarding the conservation of the environment.
