Phishing through URLs continues to rise
Investigations determined that pages such as Netflix have shown an increase from 525% in March to 853% in May with respect to attacks of this style
The confinement by Covid-19 generated an increase in the consumption of streaming platforms, which during the first weekend of the state of alarm increased by 108% in various regions of Europe according to Statista, something that also coincides with a growth in URL phishing that includes words like Netflix, HBO, YouTube and Twitch.
According to data from Webroot, part of the OpenText company specialized in security and cyber-resilience, as the confinement has been lengthening in time, URL phishing attacks related to Netflix have been presenting an increase from 525% in March to 853% in May.
The threat of URL phishing also grew on other platforms such as YouTube, with 3.064% in March compared to the previous month, followed by Twitch -337% increase- and HBO -525% more.
“Famous names are often used for phishing scams because it is a fairly simple and easy way for attackers to target a large volume of people,” detailed Kelvin Murray, senior threat researcher at Webroot.
Likewise, Murray warned that “these threats are becoming more sophisticated over time” with resources such as impersonating streaming platforms, with which “it only takes one click to put users at risk”, he concludes.
