Panama Canal settles payment for water use

Due to the shortage of water as a consequence of climate change Panama fixed a payment of up to 10 thousand dollars

The Panama Canal began this Saturday to charge a fixed amount of up to 10 thousand dollars for the use of fresh water as well as a transit itinerary registration fee from 1,500 to 5,000 dollars, in order to face the shortage of the water derived  from climate crisis and finance future plans to ensure its full availability.

The administrator of the Panama Canal Authority (ACP), Ricaurte Vásquez, warned in a public forum that this interoceanic navigation route between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean has historically been characterized by having a climate of abundant rain and in that sense the absence of the vital liquid was not worrying for the authorities until now.

Surcharges for the use of fresh water, as well as other measures, were announced on January 13 by the ACP and entered into force on Saturday.

The charges for the use of fresh water are published on the website of the interoceanic route: the landline ranges from $ 2,500 for ships with a length greater than 38.1 meters (125 feet) to 60.96 meters (200 feet) and up to $ 10,000 for ships with a length greater than 91.44 meters (300 feet).

This situation has caused the Panama Canal to reduce the daily reservation quotas from 32 to 27 to make water use more efficient and the transit service more reliable. It is known that this maritime access unites more than 140 routes and 1,700 ports in 160 countries.
