OECD agrees a tax for digital companies

This group accepted the application of rules to tax multinationals where their customers are present

The countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) reached an agreement to negotiate a tax that will allow multinationals to be taxed in the place where they have their clients, even if they do not have a physical presence there.

The goal is expected to be achieved before the end of this year. The proposal was distributed through a statement published on Friday.

The organization managed to impose the proposals submitted in October on the parties. On the other hand, it was also possible for the United States to accept the principle of a tax on large companies in the digital business, which are mostly Americans, such as Google, Amazon, Facebook or Apple.

Pascal Saint-Amans, responsible for OECD fiscal policy, was categorical that this proposal is not part of the central axis, although it has implications for its implementation.

In a press conference, Saint-Amans acknowledged that it is necessary to deepen on what that “protection regime” would mean and that for now the possibility of consensus on that element is almost null.
