Netflix allocates $ 100 million to support the audiovisual industry

$ 85 million will go to employees of their own productions who have lost their jobs due to the stoppage of filming

The American entertainment company, Netflix, announced last Friday that it will allocate $ 100 million to support workers in the audiovisual industry, who have been affected by the global crisis triggered by Covid-19.

According to Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos, “what is happening is unprecedented. We are only strong if the people we work with are strong and at Netflix we are fortunate to be able to help the hardest hit in our industry during this difficult moment.”

Sarandos indicated that $ 85 million will go to employees of his own productions that have been left without a job due to the stoppage of filming and the other $ 15 million will be used to help workers in the audiovisual industry not directly related to Netflix.

The strategist indicated that “the COVID-19 crisis is devastating for many industries, including the creative one. Almost all film and television productions have stopped worldwide leaving hundreds of thousands of crew and cast members out of work. It includes carpenters, electricians, and drivers, many of whom charge per hour and by project.”

For its part, the union of the entertainment guild in the United States, known as IATSE (International Alliance of Scene), Employees) has estimated the loss of about 120,000 jobs in the film industry due to the pandemic, mostly linked to Hollywood.
