MIT will invest in new exclusive school of artificial intelligence

The growing demand for personnel specialized in new technologies is leading companies and educational institutions to invest in training. In this sense, MIT announced that it will invest a billion dollars in the creation of an artificial intelligence center that would begin operations in 2019.

This is the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing, specialized in the research, development and teaching of AI and the areas related to this discipline. The new center will be a support to the CSAIL, a center with which MIT already counts and which is the institute’s computer and artificial intelligence laboratory. It’s one of the most important in the world.

The new school will also be independent. It will have its own dean and a staff of 50 new professors. According to L. Rafael Reif, president of MIT, the new school will be the training center for the “bilinguals of the future”. That is, the students “specialists in biology, chemistry, physics, politics, history and linguistics, with knowledge in machine learning that will help them nurture their areas of expertise”.

The school will provide students with the tools for their specialization in computer science and AI for the best performance in their disciplines. Out of the sum of US $ 1,000 million, 350 million dollars are a donation from Stephen A. Schwarman, CEO of Blackstone. Hence, the new school bears the name of this philanthropist.

The start of the academic activities is scheduled for September 2019 and the inauguration of the new building for the year 2022. The plans of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology also include the teaching of artificial intelligence throughout the university, so each student will have solid knowledge in the area regardless of the chosen profession.
