Microsoft will support innovation for digital identity

Microsoft hopes to turn blockchain-based digital identity into a line of business where consumers can have better and deeper control of their personal data

The software giant will develop two products to give consumers more control over their personal data. The first is a store of encrypted personal data or identity center, which is a combination of personal user devices and storage in the cloud through Azure, a cloud computing service.

The second, is an application similar to a wallet, which can be used to manage the permissions to people data, including the ability to revoke them when they want.

The idea of both services is that users can store identity information in the center and for others to access it, permits will be required. This premise contrasts with the status quo, where information is stored and obtained without the client’s consent.

The products will be based on decentralized identifiers (DID), a specification developed under the auspices of the World Wide Web Foundation (W3C).

DIDs do not require a central authority because they are linked in a distributed ledger or other decentralized system. This means that, unlike traditional IDs, a DID is always under user control, so each person has control over their money.

Similarly, Microsoft is developing an open source implementation of DID that will function as a second layer on several blockchains. Intended to allow a high volume of low value payments in the cryptocurrency, reserving the blockchain for the final settlement. The layer two for identity is being designed for worldwide use.
