Microsoft placed data center at sea for energy savings

The Natick Project has a network of computers powered by a submarine cable that provides energy and carries data to the coast and to the Internet

The company Microsoft recently announced that it was placed a data center at sea off the Orkney Islands, in the northeast of Scotland (United Kingdom), to investigate how it can improve the energy efficiency of their systems.

In a statement on its website, the company explained that the data center, consisting of a large white cylinder containing computers, could remain at the bottom of the sea for up to five years to study the cost of cooling the systems.

According to the company’s experts, the cost of this practice will be considerably reduced when placing them underwater.

The initiative, named Natick Project, has a computer network that is powered by an underwater cable that provides energy and takes your data to the coast and to the Internet.

If the forecasts are met and the project proves to be a success, the US company plans to sink groups of five of these cylinders and be able to deploy a data center at sea in 90 days, a practice that would take years to perform on land.
