Miami Dade at the top of inequality ranking in the United States

Miami Dade County, the most popular in Florida, shows an alarming contrast between the number of billionaires living in the area and a level of income inequality similar to that of Colombia or Panama

According to a study released by the Florida International University (FIU), the prosperity of the region “is not shared equally”. There are 30 billionaires in the county, the tenth highest concentration in the world, but at the same time it is one of the most economically unequal places in the United States.

The report, entitled Towards a more inclusive region, shows that in the economic income pyramid there is a “deep and widespread poverty” and a “small and increasingly reduced middle class” with a large workforce that depends on bad paid jobs.

It is evident that the landscapes, culture and diversity of the place contrast with the harsh reality. Miami Dade has the “second largest gap in the nation between those who have and those who do not.” It is only surpassed by New York. This inequality places the county at the same level of Panama and Colombia.

The report, prepared for the FIU by urban planner Richard Florida and Steven Pedigo professor at the University of New York, shows that the state of poverty in Miami totals 14.3% of the population.

In the same way, the place shows the “highest poverty rate among the elderly in large metropolitan areas” of the country and a “youth poverty rate that is significantly higher than the general poverty rate”.
