Mexico recovered some 1.9 million permanent jobs in August

The region's labor market showed signs of recovery and gradual reactivation in businesses and companies in non-essential economic activities

The Mexican labor market recovered 1.9 million full-time jobs (35 to 48-hour workdays) in August, following the gradual reactivation of businesses and companies in non-essential economic activity, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi in Spanish).

The employed population of the North American country amounted to a total of 50.4 million people in the eighth month of the year, while full-time employees reached 22.6 million.

Inegi points out that in August it was nobserved a recovery in the volume of employed persons in the agricultural sector and in construction similar to 2010 levels. On the contrary, commerce again presented a reduction of 1.4 million Mexicans, passing from 10.7 million to 9.3 million from July to August.

Meanwhile, the country’s labor force, or economically active population, added 608,000 people in August, going from 52.6 million to 53.2 million. Thus, of the 12 million people who left this segment, around 7.8 million have rejoined in August.

At the same time, informal workers rose to 27.8 million, with an informality rate of 55.1%, 0.2 percentage points higher than the previous month.
