Mark Karpelès sentenced in Tokyo to two years in prison

A court in Japan sentenced the "Bitcoin Baron" to two and a half years in prison on charges of misappropriation of funds

Mark Karpelès, 33, pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. He was on trial for breach of trust for allegedly manipulating computer evidence and misappropriating commercial funds. The purpose of the defendant was allegedly to cover personal expenses, in breach of the duties of his office.

Karpelès was acquitted of the charge of misappropriation of assets. The facts came to light in an investigation that revealed the sudden disappearance of hundreds of thousands of bitcoins. The company MtGox would have been the victim of a computer attack, several investigations confirm this.

The court only charged him with counterfeiting computer data for creating a false virtual currency, with a “manifest will to dissimulate”. According to the authorities, Mark Karpelès “exceeded on his knowledge as a computer engineer and his position and authority”.

Karpelès’ defender, Nobuyasu Ogata, says: “The verdict has totally absolved him of suspicions of personal enrichment and this is very important.
