Malta launches blockchain project for national education sector

The island in the Mediterranean Sea aims to group educational records into a system based on blockchain technology

Malta completed the first stage of a system based on blockchain technology to concentrate the data of the national education sector. It will also include the issue of job training for sector officials and vacation plans.

The first steps for this project began in 2017 in collaboration with Machine Learning Technologies, based in New York, United States. The main objective is to offer each citizen the possibility of storing and sharing educational records and transcripts in blockchain.

The institutions involved in the initiative include the Ministry of Education and Employment, the Institute of Tourism Studies, as well as the College of Arts, Sciences and Technology and the National Commission on Higher Education.

Natalie Smolenski, vice president of business development for Learning Machine, said that for the moment they have developed the immediate free access verification. Previously, the procedure was quite slow and frustrating.

System operation is simple. It consists of the issuing of an identification record by a Maltese institution to a resident to be downloaded and shared through a free application that uses Blockcerts, developed by MIT’s Learning Machine and Media Lab. The resident or user must keep the key for life with the possibility of sharing the documents even if the institution closes.
