Maduro wants the petro to be the unit of exchange for agriculture and food transactions

The National Executive assured that the Venezuelan cryptocurrency will be established as a fundamental unit of account in all operations

The Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro, expressed the intention to transform the petro, the Venezuelan cryptocurrency, into the usual unit of exchange for transactions in the agriculture and food sectors.

This was expressed in his television speech on Wednesday, July 22, in which he announced “the gradual relaunch of the Gran Misión AgroVenezuela“, created for the 2010-2011 period by the President at that time, Hugo Chávez.

Maduro revealed that he intends to put the cryptocurrency “at the center of what will be the national effort for the production of food for the people, as a vital strategic element,” according to state television VTV.

For his part, the Minister of Agriculture, Wilmar Castro Soteldo, directly proposed that the petro be “the new crypto-financial mechanism” to “reverse the US blockade against the country.”
