Laurentino Cortizo wins the elections in Panama

The Social Democratic candidate won against Rómulo Roux with 33% of the votes, according to the president of the electoral commission

This Sunday the Social Democrat Laurentino Cortizo won the presidential elections of Panama, against the right-wing Rómulo Roux. So the electoral commisiion president Heibarto Araúz announced during a telephone call that was broadcast by the media.

“The virtual winner to the office of President of the Republic for the quinquennium 2019-2024“, detailed Araúz.

The elected president stressed: “I humbly receive the announcement, an announcement that is important for the country, an announcement of great responsibility where I am prepared with a team to assume the reins of the country from the first of July of this year”.

The results indicate that, with 95% of the centers counted Cortizo won with 33% of the votes followed by Roux, who obtained 31%.

Both are opponents of Varela, who ends his period hit by economic decline and corruption scandals and who did not show up for the race because Panama does not allow immediate reelection.

Prior to the publication of the results, candidate Roux had announced that for the moment “they were not going to accept any result“.
