Juan Guaidó assumed the interim presidency of Venezuela

The president of the National Assembly (AN) indicated this January 23rd that he will fulfill the responsibilities of the position

The president of the National Assembly (AN), Juan Guaidó, took office on January 23rd as the interim president of Venezuela as part of the plan of the transitional government that is being carried out by the Legislative Power.

“I swear to assume formally the powers of the National Executive as president in charge of Venezuela to achieve the cessation of usurpation, a transitional government and have free elections,” explained the interim president from the Plaza Juan Pablo II, located in Chacao, Caracas.

After being sworn in, US President Donald Trump was one of the first heads of state to back Juan Guaidó, followed by other nations such as Colombia, Chile, Denmark, Kosovo, among others.

Maduro breaks relations with the United States

Later, Nicolás Maduro from the balcony of Venezuela’s presidential palace, in Miraflores, announced the breakdown of diplomatic relations with the United States.

“I have decided to break diplomatic and political relations with the imperialist government of the United States,” he explained in the company of Diosdado Cabello, Tareck El Aisami and others govermental officials.

Maduro said all consular staff have to leave the country within the next 72 hours and go back to their country of origin.

A short time later, the interim president of the country sent a statement to the embassies to whom he urged to remain in the country despite what Maduro said.
